Healthy snacks. What constitutes a healthy snack? Healthy has a lot of connotations but when I think of something that’s healthy, I think nutrition and natural – not something that has been packaged, preserved or processed.
With 9 out of 10 people not getting the recommended servings of fruits and veggies in their lives, fruits and veggies are a Great place to start with snacking.
Fruits, veggies, and nuts are PACKED with micronutrients that benefit your body and mind, they are relatively inexpensive, and are easy to carry around!
Fruit
Lots of fruit does NOT have to be refrigerated so it makes a perfect thing to carry around until you need a boost.
Fruit has a bad rep because it has sugar in it. #1, it’s natural sugar that your body can process #2, our bodies need sugar. If you’re having a sugar craving, it’s a much better option to reach for a banana instead of a candy bar.
Here are just a handful of options that make great portable snacks:
- Oranges
- Mandarines
- Apples
- Bananas
- Grapes
Veggies
Vegetables are an awesome snack because they are filling, full of fiber, and can also be toted around without being refrigerated. Vegetables are high in water content and nutrients so they are filling and are really beneficial to your health.
You could eat as much veggies as you want and not make a big calorie dent in your daily intake. Here are some filling veggie snack options.
- Carrots
- Cucumber
- Potatoes
- Fresh green beans
- Peas
Nuts
Nuts are super calorie dense so you don’t want to eat a lot of them. Unlike fruit and veggies, nuts are high in fat and protein. Again, your body needs fat and protein, so it’s good for you to have a handful of nuts. Nuts are highly nutritious and have omegas which are good for your skin and heart and so much more. I suggest portioning out one or two handfuls so you don’t accidentally overeat nuts which is easy to do because they are so calorie dense.
Here are a few nutty options that make healthy on the go snacks.
- Trail mix
- Mixed nuts
- Walnuts
- Almonds
- Pumpkin seeds
As you can see, fruits, veggies, and nuts are the ultimate, healthy, on-the-go snacks because they are highly nutritious, easy to carry around, and are inexpensive.
Next time you go to the store, grab a couple mixed veggie bags, some snap pees, and a couple apples and snack away!
